When you're making home improvement plans, a new floor could be a topic you should cover. Like almost all big ticket items your new floors will probably come with the option of purchasing an extended warranty. Most people will avoid purchasing this warranty because they think it is an unnecessary expense. In general this is the case; however there are times when it might be a good idea to get the warranty. In large part the decision about whether the warranty is a good idea will depend on the terms that are being offered.

The decision about whether or not extended warranties for floors are a good idea is not an easy one to answer, mainly because there is no answer that is right for everybody. As a general rule extended warranties are not a particularly good idea. However in some cases they may actually be beneficial. When it comes to an extended warranty for your floors there are quite a few things that you are going to want to consider, the biggest of these will be the cost of the warranty.

The biggest thing that you have to look at when you are deciding if an extended warranty will be how much the warranty costs compared to the cost of the floors. In general new floors can be pretty expensive. If you can get a warranty at a fairly low price then it might be worthwhile to look into. That being said it is really only worth considering if you have fairly expensive floors. If you have picked the least expensive floors you could find there is probably little value in having a warranty on them.

The other big thing that you are going to want to look at when you are deciding whether an extended warranty is a good idea is going to be just what is covered and for how much. In truth there are only two reasons that you are going to have a problem with your floors, either they are made out of poor quality material or they were installed improperly. In most cases correcting these problems will be the responsibility of the installer or the manufacturer. This would be the biggest argument against getting an extended warranty. However if you can get a warranty that will cover you for things like scratches on your floor it might be worthwhile.

One other thing that you are going to want to look at is how long the warranty will cover you for. In most cases flooring is expected to last for decades, so a warranty that only lasts for a few years is probably not going to be that helpful. It might be a good idea if you are worried about something going wrong in the early days after your floors have been installed. Therefore in most cases a warranty is not really necessary. However there are going to be situations where the warranty can really come in handy.
